Stephen, who is gay, and his father Melvin Matthews were victims of homophobia, a bad investigation, a hack lawyer and the public's growing willingness to take any allegations of child abuse, however far-fetched, at face value. When Stephen's five-year-old son, egged on by a bitter, vindictive mother and a gay-hating stepfather, contended that his dad and granddad had, among other things, raped him with a machete, they were sentenced to 35 years in prison despite the absence of any physical evidence.
